Roman Religion
One of the greatest writers of history in the English language was Edward Gibbon, author of the epic "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". His comment on religion is succinct and pithy: "The various modes of worship, which prevailed in the Roman world, were all considered by the people, as equally true; by the philosopher, as equally false; and by the magistrates, as equally useful."
